Magic of Darkness and Nature
Trollskap, or troll magic, is a form of magical practice in Scandinavian folklore associated with natural and wild entities such as trolls. This magic was considered dangerous and was linked to the manipulation of dark forces and the creation of illusions. In Seax-Wica and other esoteric practices, Trollskap symbolizes magic that works with uncontrollable forces of nature, reflecting how Woden might use his arcane wisdom to engage with the unknown.
Trollskap, as a magical practice, embodies the conscious handling of chaotic energies, highlighting the duality of creation and destruction. Practitioners who delve into this form of magic seek to understand and respect the forces beyond human control. This reflects a profound connection to the untamed nature and its dark power, allowing practitioners to recognize the balance between light and shadow and how these energies influence the cycle of life and death. This understanding strengthens the perception that darkness is not an end but a necessary phase in the process of renewal and transformation.
In Norse mythology, trolls and jötnar (or jotuns) are distinct entities, although they can share certain characteristics and overlap in descriptions. Jötnar are mythological beings known as giants and are considered primordial forces of nature, often associated with chaos and destructive power. In ancient texts, jötnar are frequent opponents of the gods, especially the Æsir, such as Odin and Thor, and originate from Jotunheim, one of the nine realms of the Norse cosmos.
On the other hand, trolls in Scandinavian folklore are more local creatures associated with mountains, forests, and caves. They can vary from giants to smaller, deformed beings and are often described as less sophisticated than jötnar, acting more primitively or wildly.
While both can be described as giants in certain stories, trolls are not necessarily jötnar. Both trolls and jötnar represent natural forces and have an ambiguous relationship with gods and humans, but in strict mythology, they are different categories:
Jötnar: Cosmic beings of great power and magnitude, related to primordial chaos and nature.
Trolls: More folkloric and regional beings, often seen as spirits or creatures inhabiting specific places and having a more local influence.
